**** edit regarding last statement****: No, I do not think any
particular race is smarter than another. I should've written more
than I did.... What I disagree with, is that somehow, there is some
"ancient" Asian (or Chinese) secret to how and/or why Asian students
succeed in the classroom, which seems to be the selling point of this
book. Does that necessarily imply that Asians are smarter --
no.... I just think there's no secret to it. If you have ability,
and you use it, then that's the end of it... there's no Asian
upbringing secret, IMHO.I wasted a bunch of money on my car the past two weeks. First, I
took my car in to fix my A/C. It worked for one day, then it
didn't. So I took it back. The manager there wouldn't fix it for
free (why not -- the work was already done, but it didn't fix it) so I
had to pay again. BS.Joanne, a friend of mine, and I went to eat Szechuan dim sum today at a
local restaurant. I love it -- I can eat almost any
cuisine. My friend was a different story. Although he's Asian
(Chinese, born in Vietnam), and still FOB-like (in speech, dress,
etc.), he didn't seem too thrilled about any of the dishes, except for
a noodle-soup, probably because it's similar to pho. At least he
tried it though. My best friend (a white guy) would smell it
first, take one little nibble (probably what an ant would eat), then
put down on his plate, and continue to nibble, pretending to like
it. He's really not comfortable trying new stuff, so he usually
eats pizza or mac & cheese (I'm not kidding, that's all I eat if I
visit his house.)Don't ever switch jobs into the computer programming field, unless you
enjoy the constant struggle of keeping your skills current. I've
read about 5 technical books in the last two months, just so I can stay
current. I'm constantly browsing technical websites, emails,
etc., just to know what's going on. If you stop for a year, your
skills will be outdated, and you'll have to go to some old, boring
project.Naruto has started on Cartoon Network. I don't have cable, so I don't
know how good (or bad) it is, but the reviews seem to be good, except
for the fact that they made a guitar intro and ending, like how they
ruined the Japanese songs from Dragon Ball Z. Americanized anime
songs are always terrible.http://www.xanga.com/belovedjojo had this link
on her page... interesting, but I highly disagree with their statement
"The reason that Asian students outperform their peers in the
classroom has nothing to do with how they are born and everything to do
with how they are raised."

In disagreeing with that statement are you claiming that Asians are just naturally smarter than their peers due to genetics? That would seem to be a very controversial statement
I don't mind changing jobs... if it brings more money in. I like learning more stuff anyway.
And asians usually do better when they're raised correctly. All the ones I know who have been "americanized" got dumbed down. So I agree with that statement. Everyone's born dumb.
Hmmmmmm...I think it's more plausible to say that someone excels due to the way they were raised compared to the way they are born. I don't think anyone is really born smart. It's something you aquire. You either choose to learn and excel or you can sit back, be lazy, and become stupid. It's a special case with everyone.
Eh, did you change that quote? Am I confused? Or am I still hungover from this weekend's binge drinking?
Overall, the Naruto dubs actually weren't that bad. The first episode was pretty horrid though. The voice acting was super stiff, but that's to be expected since it was the 1st episode afterall, and it didn't seem like they had a great hold on who any of the characters really were just yet. There was a HUGE improvement in terms of voice acting from the 1st episode and the 2nd episode. While I cringed a LOT throughout the 1st episode, I found myself actually enjoying the 2nd episode almost as much as I enjoyed it the first time I saw it in Japanese.
A major plus is that they've kept the translations pretty similiar and kept the honorifics, like "sensei." Much better than what VIZ did for the manga. For "Shadow Replication," they said something along the lines of, "Mulit-Shadow-Clone jutsu!" It was such a relief that they didn't say "Art of Doppleganger!" LOL.
The biggest letdown was the fact that they changed the musical openings/endings, and ended up with some horribly put-together montage of the 1st and 2nd openings with random battle scenes being thrown in. I really wished they could've stuck with using the 2nd opening, Asian Kung Fu Generation's "Haruka Kanata." That was my favorite. But they've kept the original background music so that was really cool.
Overall, it wasn't bad at all. Of course, nothing compares to the original, but I think the dubs are good enough to keep up with every week...even though it's way behind xD But I like the earlier episodes a lot more than the latest non-manga-related story arcs in the anime right now, so it won't be painful sitting through them again. Even if it is in English.
hmm... i agree with that statement. you think we're naturally smarter?
I think asians are smarter just due to the time they put into studying. Me on the other hand....used to never study...but still get passing grades.
i think that nurture over nature is more apt. the way one is raised and their values more than trumps their genetics. hell...most of the famous geniuses are white.
